There are various types of valances for windows, which can be used to boost the style of your room and window treatments.
Some valances are attached to the curtain panels themselves. This type of valance requires only one curtain rod. If that’s not possible, it is recommended that you buy a double curtain rod. This is where there are two rods together with one is set farther back than the other. This creates flow between the curtain and valance.
When choosing your valances, choose from one of these three types:-
Balloon valances get their name from being puffy like a balloon. These valances are usually made from light weight material like cotton. For a puffier look, stuff the valance with scraps of tissue paper. You can make it as puffy as you like.
Scarf valances are simply draped over a rod with tails hanging down on each side. You can use a variety of materials and fabrics. The material does not require a rod pocket, because the fabric is draped.
Ascot valances hang in a triangular pattern over your window. They often have decorative accessories such as tassels hanging from each triangle. These valances are a little more difficult to make yourself, but really draw attention to the window.
If you wish you can make your window appear taller with the help of window valences. Choose a fabric to match your curtains and have valances made or buy them together with your window curtains in a set. When you hang your valances position them slightly above where you might normally hang them above the top of the window. So instead of placing your curtain rod something like 4″ above the window place it 6 or 8″ above. As long as the top of the window is covered it will be fine.
