Santa Claus is coming to …

… the Pueblo. Christmas has special meaning for Native Americans. Navajo folk artists have fun with Santa Claus figures carved from wood. The pottery makers of Jemez Pueblo create fun and fancy Santa Claus figures, in keeping with their tradition of creating pottery storyteller figures. They come in sizes small and large. They include ones with children swarming over Santa, who brings them balls, books, stockings, dolls and other gifts. Some Santas include Christmas trimmings, like wreaths.

The pottery is all individually hand-made, intricately tooled and colorfully painted. Jemez Santa pots make wonderful Christmas touches for a home. They arrive to smiles and oohs and aahs.

Pueblo pottery makers also celebrate Christmas with sets of pottery pieces representing the Holy Family and others, including beasts, gathered at creche for the Christ child’s birth.

Merry Christmas to you.
