There are few people out there who wouldn’t list the rose among their favorite flowers. Most gardeners really want to be able to grow beautiful rose flowers in their garden. It just feels like a stamp of approval on their skills in gardening to know that they can grow roses. As flowers that are not native to America, roses need a certain amount of special care. Once you learn how though, growing roses can be really easy.
Your first rule to successfully raising rose flowers would be to plant them in a place in your garden where you can be sure they will get a lot of sun – about six hours a day right on them directly, should do. Roses don’t grow in every kind of soil either. You need soil that has a pH of of between five and six or so. Some gardeners attempt to grow their rosebushes really close together in the hope of achieving a great visual effect with lots of flowers crowding around close together. That isn’t really a good idea with roses – they need plenty of space, and air. For climber roses, you should probably set up a trellis or plant them next to a fence to help them spread all over something that will support their weight. Since rosebushes need to be in the sun all day, these tend to lose a lot of water. The best way to keep them supplied with enough moisture is to place them in a bed of mulch. It’ll help absorb a lot of moisture and keep it there for when the roots need it.
As much as roses need moisture, they don’t like it when you water them out of a hose and get the leaves all wet. The best way to go about it would be to install a drip irrigation system; barring that, to gently water your rosebushes with a watering can early in the morning each day should work very well. For your efforts to bear fruit (or flowers, rather), you must remember that great rose flowers come from great fertilizing. Luckily for you, rosebushes don’t have much of an appetite, and a simple bag of organic fertilizer from your local gardening outlet should do. Grab a couple of handfuls of the fertilizer and try to pat it into the soil. Water it down and then a add layer of mulch over it to keep the goodness in.
The question that really mystifies rose gardeners has to do with how pruning is to be done. It doesn’t have to be as complicated as people imagines. Experts in gardening usually ask you to prune rather severely. You find that pruning your rosebushes once a year around winter, lightly cutting off the very smallest of the branches should do. It depends on the kind of plants you have. Some bushes really get out of hand, and need a bit of severe pruning to even look manageable. With all this care, your roses should really bloom, and really fragrant will they be too.
