Summer is really getting started now and some of my daylilies are starting to bloom. They are a happy flower that reminds me of summer. While many are yellow or orange, there are far more colors that range from purple to red to pink.
Growing daylilies is very easy to grow and they require little care once they are established. They usually require a sunny spot that gets at least 6 hours of sun a day, but some can tolerate light shade. They can grow in almost any type of soil, including clay as long as they have good drainage.
Like most plants they do better if organic matter is added to the soil. While they can tolerate drought once established, they do better with some water, and should be watered adequately during the first year. If you do fertilize them, use a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10.
Caring for daylilies is easy, and they need little other than watering, deadheading and cutting back at the end of the season. So try growing some day lilies. They are a sunny, happy flower and just say “summer”. They are sure to be a perky, carefree addition to your home garden.
